Non-motorized Level 1 - Max 5 students

This Level 1 course allows up to 5 students and will be taught in backcountry locations around Bozeman and/or Big Sky. Field locations are YTD and will be decided based on snow and weather conditions.

Our Level 1 avalanche course teaches the fundamentals necessary to travel confidently and safely in the backcountry. This SPAE Level 1 course is orientated towards skiers and splitboarders.

The classroom portion will all be offered virtually and includes four prerecorded talks students can watch on their own time and one live Zoom session. The Zoom session will be held on the evening of December 19th (Tuesday) from 6-8:30 pm. The primary portion of the class consists of two full days in the snow. The field portions will include a good amount of backcountry travel as we assess avalanche terrain, snowpack stability, communication skills, and mountain weather. Avalanche rescue drills also play a significant role in the field sessions.

This is a great opportunity to sharpen your backcountry skills, develop more confidence in your partners, and become more knowledgeable and safer in the backcountry. All students will receive a Level 1 certificate of completion.

Our Level 1 follows the guidelines set by the American Avalanche Association (AAA). Our instructors are experienced avalanche educators who provide the highest level of expertise. This course is designed to build a strong foundation of backcountry skills and is the perfect stepping stone to more advanced training in the future.
