Non-Motorized Avalanche Level 1 - Near Big Sky, MT

This Level 1 course allows up to 10 students and will be taught in the backcountry of Yellowstone Park south of Big Sky. The field locations are roughly an hour's drive from Bozeman so there are no lodging requirements for students.

Our Level 1 avalanche course teaches the fundamentals necessary to travel confidently and safely in the backcountry. This SPAE Level 1 course is orientated towards skiers and splitboarders.

The classroom portion will all be offered virtually and includes four prerecorded talks students can watch on their own time. There will also be a live Zoom session held on the evening of February 9th (Friday) from 6 to 8:30 pm. The primary portion of the class consists of two full days in the snow. The field portions will include a good amount of backcountry travel as we assess avalanche terrain, snowpack stability, communication skills, and mountain weather. Avalanche rescue drills also play a significant role in the field sessions.

This is a great opportunity to sharpen your backcountry skills, develop more confidence in your partners, and become more knowledgeable and safer in the backcountry.

Our Level 1 follows the guidelines set by the American Avalanche Association (AAA). Our instructors are experienced avalanche educators who provide the highest level of expertise. This course is designed to build a strong foundation of backcountry skills and is the perfect stepping stone to more advanced training in the future.
